There is steel pipe everywhere! Steel pipe can be found used in a variety of structures and conduits wherever you turn or look. Moreover, the pipe that is "out of sight, out of mind" and serves its purpose below the surface is not even mentioned.
On a pipe chart that is used by everyone in the industry, you can find the nominal or standard sizes of pipes. Each steel pipe size's actual Outside Diameter, Nominal Outside Diameter, Wall Thickness, and Weight Per Foot are displayed on the Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) chart. There are basically three different kinds of pipe, and each one is made in a different way. There is a seamless steel pipe that begins as a solid round and is made by drilling a hole through the middle with a tool after being heated almost to its melting point. "Hot Finsh Seamless Pipe" is what people call this. The second and most well-known type, ERW or "Electric Resistance Welded" Pipe, is made from a steel "Skelp" reel or cut-to-width coil. After the Skelp is turned around by a series of rollers, an electric welder forms the longitudinal seam that runs the length of the pipe as the edges meet. "Buttweld" steel pipe is the last and least frequently used manufacturing technique. The process is essentially identical to that of ERW pipe, with the exception that, after being rolled up, the edges are heated and fused together to form the pipe. By rolling and welding pieces of steel plate into cylinders or "Cans," you can create larger O.D. steel pipe and then welding them together end to end to form the pipe.
